BYM in Concert March 15th and 16th

February 2013 - by Victoria Kickham

Mark your calendars for Boston Youth Moves’ annual company concert, March 15 and 16 at Boston University Dance Theater.  The show will feature the Level 3 and 4 dancers performing a mix of new and previously performed works by BYM faculty and guest artists. The intimate BU Dance Theater is a great place to get an up-close look at the hard work that goes into this inspiring pre-professional teen program, so be sure to get your tickets early.

Dancers, choreographers and BYM staff are still busy planning and rehearsing, but here’s a quick look at some of the highlights thus far:

The Level 4 dancers will perform one of my favorite new pieces from BYM artistic director Jim Viera: Anastasis, a moving modern piece set to music by Dead Can Dance. The piece’s swirling evergreen skirts and ritualistic movement beautifully convey the themes of recovery and rebirth—a heavy task for teens, but this group is up to it. Level 4 also will perform Chasing Time, which, like Anastasis, debuted in December as part of the JNDS Not the Nutcracker show. Guest artist and BYM alumna Stephanie Hilton—who has performed with Giordano Dance Chicago, Cirque de Soleil and others—choreographed this vibrant modern piece that showcases the group’s youth and strength.

The concert also will include works by BYM director Jeannette Neill (I think a tango is in store), faculty member Devon Fitchett (also a BYM alum), and guest artist and BYM alumnus Matt Anctil. Matt was in residence earlier this month, setting a new piece on the teens and teaching a jazz master class for adults.  Among his professional credits, Matt recently made his Broadway debut in La Cage aux Folles.

Many thanks to all of the BYM donors, whose generous support helps fund this annual show and keep this vital dance program going.  Be sure to check back here for additional updates and sneak peeks as the event draws near—and don’t forget to reserve your tickets today!
