Spring may be in swing, but faculty and staff at JNDS are already looking toward summer. The studio is hosting several youth and teen dance programs this June, July and August focused on a range of styles and techniques. The programs start in June with workshops for kids ages 3 to 12, followed by the studio’s annual three-week Powered by Dance, summer dance intensive for teens in July, and wrapping up with a new, week-long dance camp in August for kids ages 9-12.
·
Story
Land! is a three-week workshop for kids ages 3 to 5 combining a creative
introduction to dance with arts and crafts that focus on fun, classic
children’s stories. Classes are Mondays, June 3, 10 and 17 from 2:30 p.m. to
3:30 p.m.
·
Jazz it
up! is a three-week workshop for kids ages 6-8 introducing them to jazz,
funk and hip-hop styles. Classes will be on Mondays, June 3, 10 and 17, from 4
p.m. to 6 p.m.
·
On
Broadway! is the studio’s program for 9 to 12 year-olds, offering musical
theater repertoire that students will perform for parents and friends at the
end of the workshop. This program is held on Thursdays, June 6, 13 and 20 from
4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
In July, teenagers from all over New England will descend on
the studio for its annual Powered by
Dance, summer dance intensive, a three-week program that immerses young
dancers in ballet, modern and a range of styles classes from 9:30 a.m. to 4
p.m. each day. Classes are grouped into beginner/intermediate, intermediate and
intermediate/advanced levels, and styles include jazz, theatre dance,
contemporary and hip hop—taught by some of the dance community’s best-known dance
educators, including many of the renowned Boston Youth Moves faculty. Dancers
may register for one, two or three weeks of the program, which features an
informal performance/demonstration at the end of each week. This intensive will also be used as placement
for any interested dancer wishing to participate in the 2013-2014 Boston Youth
Moves program.
New this year is a one-week dance camp offering ballet,
jazz, tap, hip hop and musical theatre styles for kids ages 9 to 12. The
program runs daily from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and will include repertoire
that will be performed at the end of the week for family and friends. Taught by
JNDS and BYM faculty, this is an exciting new addition to the JNDS summer
program and promises to be a fun week for all.
